A Big, Fat Retrospective by Steve Cooper (Sept...
John Prine was never destined to be another Elvis Presley. For one thing, Prine has a face that wouldn’t win any beauty contests. For another thing, Prine’s voice sounds a bit like Froggy from the Our Gang comedies. Not exactly the “right stuff” for rock and roll royalty. And, yet, Prine has been releasing quality albums for 26 years now—something Elvis stopped doing in...

Grandpa Jones
Grandpa Jones Louis Marshall “Grandpa” Jones was one person who aged right into his makeup. Like his real appearance, however, his actual background and role in country music were deceptive and more complex than they seem. Beginning in the 1920s, he began attracting attention with his boisterous performing style, old-time banjo performing, and powerful singing, and by the 1940s, with hits like...

Buddy Moss
I first heard Buddy Moss’ name in passing on AM 1690 one night while driving through Grant Park. I heard it again while listening to a charming old black man tell me about Atlanta Blues history at Blind Wille’s one night and then saw a picture of him at Northside Tavern (both excellent blues dives).  His story goes like this: He was born in 1914 (probably), half-way between Atlanta...

Loudon Wainwright III
Like most folks my age, I was exposed to Rufus before his father. I’d heard of Loudon and listened to his songs (around the release of “Here Come The Choppers”) but wasn’t blown away till I got the Squid and the Whale soundtrack in ‘05 and “The Swimming Song”  changed everything (Even now, if you get a mix from me and it is during the summer months,...

On "Country Music"
I was home with my parents over the break and they wanted me to watch a performance of Old Crow Medicine Show on Marty Stuart’s Country Show on RFDTV which includes show like the “Georgia Farm Monitor” or “This Week in Agribusiness.” OCMS’s performance was lame. I don’t even think they did any original stuff, but I was a little amazed by the show itself....
